workcampNE is a non-profit group designed to serve the elderly, disabled and under-resourced. The labor and all of the construction materials, no matter how extensive the job, is done for the residents completely free of charge. workcampNE asks each student and adult to pay a tuition to attend camp. The proceeds from the tuition are then poured back into building materials for the homes we repair, gas, food, etc. This is why it is so important to find schools and communities who believe in what we do – to work with us as true partners as we seek for usage fees to be waived in turn for not charging the residents nor the community.
Our desire is to work within a thirty minute radius of the school we are housed in. The school provides us a base camp from which to operate. The campers head out into the surrounding community by 8:00 am to spend all day working at their sites and return to the school in the late afternoon. They shower, have dinner, attend an evening program. They sleep on the floors of classrooms at night. We are fully self sufficient and we are fully insured. We bring our own teams of staff that include administration, first aid, kitchen workers, tradesmen, and nighttime monitors. We partner with the host school’s staff to establish a great working relationship.
Our adult sponsor to student ratio runs one to five, ensuring proper supervision both at the school and also in the resident’s homes. All our volunteer leaders are over the age of 21 and have had background checks done to ensure safety for our students. Camp usually runs approximately 200-300 people per week with the campers coming from all over the country.
